Nature

(horrible jpeg conversion) Images to be used in my personal project: My initial intention was to use letterforms and symbols to create a landscape and sense of atmosphere. After much fun playing with typewriters and InDesign, I've ended up trying to interpret a poem still using abstract forms. I think there is still the hint of landscape formation but seems to be leaning almost towards a story-book now.. I want to make a small booklet with these images - have a week left to put it all together!

These aren't my thoughts

(as you can see, it didn't fit into the A3 scanner all in one go so I'm afraid it's in pieces)

Week long drawing project. Research artists; consider your own drawing style; produce a piece of work you believe to be a good drawing. I don't know if it's good or not but I know it took a fair chunk of time..

I tried to use this piece as distraction therapy. It's nice to get a bit lost in mark-making. This approach can inspire hour-long sessions of intense focus but unfortunately it's incredibly easy to become lazy and switch on the auto-pilot.

My work seems to be moving towards abstract repetition this semester. I quite like seeing my work going in a 'direction' for once.

Love|sick

My life seems to be about Uni work at the moment. So it's incredibly disheartening that I don't have all that much to show for it..

Screen Printing

The produce of last week's printing workshop. I'll never be amazing at it - I don't have the patience for strict registration and mixing paints to exact colours.. but it was somewhat enjoyable.
(sorry my scanner is a wee bit small - prints look a bit odd. but oh well, I'm just happy I managed to print something this time!)

We Feel Fine

May as well use the opportunity to bend the brief a little and do whatever you feel like. As long as you do some proper research! (Which I have yet to do..)
It would be nice to be able to make a proper website.. but how much more fun it is to clumsily attempt text dialogues through Flash and Dreamweaver.

Birds

Ack, oh dear, no blogging over the holidays.

Have started this year with much more enthusiasm for our upcoming essay than the Community Project we're meant to be getting on with.. I've chosen the question on feminist critiques on the way women are represented in contemporary visual media. In reality, I'm much more interested in how they are portrayed in advertising than in film, so I might need to tweak my question a bit..

The books I'm reading are generally interesting, though I can't help that sometimes women read too much into certain messages. Yes, prejudices, even presented subtly or unconsciously need to be challenged, but the sometimes it feels like some of the authors are making it seem like every second advert is condoning violence, objectification of women, alcoholism, etc. I might need to do some primary research and count up all the adverts I could pick away at and find something morally objectionable, but now I'm rambling a bit..

Anyway, this particular image in one of the books I'm reading did strike me as particular sinister and genuinely shocking. Even on the surface it's still advocating plying your woman with alcohol if they won't go along with what you say... before you even think about the other underlying suggestions of date-rape and violence..

Right, constructing an argument for my essay is not really what I should be doing on my blog. Unfortunately I haven't done any good drawings this holiday, so here are a few brief sketches from the zoo
